Seek urgent care, not an app entry, for a headache that is sudden and severe (“worst of my life”, peaking in seconds), or that comes with weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, loss of vision, fever with a stiff neck, seizure or head injury. The same goes for a headache that is new after age 50, changes pattern abruptly, wakes you from sleep, or worsens with coughing or lying down. In an emergency call your local emergency number.
1. Migraine Meta is not a medical device
It is a wellness product: a diary with descriptive statistics on top of it. It does not diagnose any condition, does not state that you have migraine or any other disorder, does not recommend, prescribe, titrate or discourage any treatment, does not predict attacks and does not alert on them. Nothing it displays is medical advice, a professional opinion, or a substitute for consultation with a physician, neurologist, pharmacist or other qualified clinician.
This position is deliberate and documented in our source. Where the app reports a number against a published threshold, it reports the number and stops — naming what it is takes a clinician.
2. What the numbers actually mean
Every finding in the app is computed from what you logged, and only from that. Which means:
- Association is not cause. A statistical link between an exposure and your attacks may reflect cause, reverse cause (the attack causing the craving, the disturbed sleep, the neck tension), or something else that varies with both.
- Garbage in, confident garbage out. Incomplete or inconsistent logging, or logging only on bad days, produces results that look precise and are wrong. Recalled entries are less reliable than same-day ones.
- Uncertainty is part of the result. Intervals and corrections are shown because they matter; reading only the point estimate defeats the purpose of the app.
- “Still counting” means exactly that. It is not a hint, not a weak positive and not a negative. It means the data cannot yet support a claim.
- A ruled-out result is about you, not about the substance. It says the app would likely have seen an effect of a given size in your data and did not.
- Imported and third-party data can be wrong. Sleep and step figures are as accurate as the device that recorded them; barometric pressure comes from a public weather model for a nearby coordinate, not from your room.
3. Medication and preventive trials
The app can score how an acute medication performed for you and can run a twelve-week preventive trial against your own baseline with a decision date named up front. This is bookkeeping on your own outcomes — it is not a dosing recommendation and not permission to change anything.
Never start, stop, skip, delay or change the dose of any medication because of something this app showed you. Take that number to your prescriber and decide together. Be aware that frequent use of acute migraine medication can itself cause medication-overuse headache; the app counting your doses is not the app approving of them.
4. No clinician relationship
Using the app creates no doctor–patient or other professional relationship between you and us. We are software developers, not your clinicians. Reports you generate are intended to help you have a better-informed conversation with a clinician who can examine you — not to replace that conversation.
5. Your responsibility
You use the app and any output from it at your own risk. You are responsible for the decisions you make about your own health, and for involving a qualified professional in them. To the fullest extent permitted by law we accept no liability for any harm arising from reliance on anything the app displays. See section 12 of the Terms of Service.
6. Not a substitute for a proper diagnosis
Headache has many causes, some of them serious, and telling them apart requires history taking and examination that no app performs. If you have not had your headaches assessed by a clinician, do that first. The app is useful once you know what you are tracking.
